Black Widow Spiders in Maricopa AZ

Black Widows in Maricopa, Arizona

Black Widow Spiders in Maricopa AZ

In addition to rattlesnakes and scorpions found in Maricopa, AZ you can add one more creepy crawler to the list… black widow spiders.  I’ve seen them around my own home in Maricopa and since I’m a real estate agent I come across them around vacant homes as well when checking out a property.

The black widow spiders in Maricopa AZ spin a messy looking silk web that has no specific pattern to it.  It also LOVES clutter.  If you have lots of yard tools, plant pots, and things like that propped up against your house you are creating real attractive real estate for the spider to call home.  You should also keep your garage clutter free.  If you have items scattered around your garage and lots of cardboard boxes I wouldn’t dig around in them without gloves.  If you are bit by the black widow you should get in to the doctor or Urgent Care right away.  Usually the bite is not life threatening but always err on the side of caution.

In my experience, black widow spiders in Maricopa AZ have been in any cluttered area around the home and up near the gutter.  Or where the roof meets the wall of the house.  They are hidden in the daytime but as soon as the sun goes down they come out and sit still in their webs awaiting prey.  They don’t move much but if startled they are very fast to get themselves out of site.

Black Widow Spiders in Maricopa AZ

I remember when I first moved into my home in Rancho el Dorado in 2011 it had been vacant for a while and I had purchased it site unseen.  When I made the move from New Jersey to Maricopa I had never seen a black widow and looking around my house at night within the first few days of being in Arizona I was filled with fear to see black widows all along the house near the roof.

My heart was racing because I do not like spiders.  I came up with a plan.  I grabbed the Raid bug spray and sprayed all of the black widows real good and ran inside.  After about half hour I went to check out the webs again.  To my horror all the spiders were right back sitting in their webs totally unaffected by the poison. I found out that regular sprays don’t usually work.  You need to purchase a specific spray for black widows.  In the end, I did something I do not recommend and got the spiders down with a stick then stepped on them.  I got every one.  And guess what, I never had any more of them again after that.

Looking to buy a home in Maricopa?

If you’re curious if you have black widows spiders in Maricopa AZ, I’d walk the perimeter of your home at night.  Grab a flashlight and check it out.  And remember to always wear gloves when gardening or cleaning up the garage.  They say the safest way to get rid of spiders is to vacuum them and their webs.  I’d be too scared they would somehow crawl through the tubes of the vacuum and come back out!  lol.  It’s probably best just to call a pest control company.

Cow Smell in Maricopa AZ. How bad is it?

Cow Odor in Maricopa, Arizona

cow_smell_maricopa_az

You may be considering moving to Maricopa, AZ and have heard stories about the “cow smell“.  I have lived in Maricopa since 2011 and have first hand experience with this.  There are two dairy cow farms on the outside perimeter of the city of Maricopa.  One is on 238 and one is on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway.  In 2011, when I moved here it seemed like the smell was more severe than it is now.  The odor doesn’t linger constantly.  It’s just once in a while when the wind carries it towards the city and gives you a whiff of it.  The heat of the summer can make it worse.  There have been times when it was pretty potent but I have not had that experience in the past two years or so.  All in all, I wouldn’t let me effect my decision to move to Maricopa, AZ.

I know the city is working on resolving the issue more.  Would this affect a decision to live in Maricopa?  For some, it may.  However, if you ask many current homeowners in Maricopa I’m sure they would say it’s just a minor concern and has definitely improved from 5-10 years ago.

Wild Horses on 347 around Maricopa Arizona

Wild Horses on 347 around Maricopa Arizona

It’s great that you can still see horses run wild near Maricopa, AZ. You can see them sometimes while headed north or south on SR347 to or from Maricopa to the valley.  They are beautiful and are sometimes very close to the road.  If you see a mature white horse, that’s Charlie.  He is the leader of the pack.

However, much of the high speed traffic on 347 tends to slow down and cause a small backup due to drivers slowing down to view the horses, snap a quick cell phone picture or even pull over to take photographs.  So make sure to stay alert while driving so watching the lovely horsies doesn’t cause an accident.  🙂

You can read up more about the horses here!

Scorpions in Maricopa AZ?

Are there Scorpions in Maricopa, AZ?

scorpions in maricopa az

Scorpions could be a concern for you if you decide to buy a home in Maricopa, AZ.  You definitely wouldn’t want to purchase a new house and realize after you move in that there are scorpions creeping around.  Yes, there are scorpions in Maricopa AZ, but any home in the Phoenix area can have them.  It’s the desert!

Moving to Maricopa AZ Homes for Sale in Maricopa AZ

Some people I’ve spoken to say they have never seen a scorpion in Arizona, let alone scorpions in Maricopa AZ.  Others say they find them around their home once in a while.  One of the reasons is because scorpions have a path they travel for migration.  Even if a subdivision is built on the land over their migration path, they will still continue to use that path.  That’s why one house may get scorpions while their neighbor has never seen one.  And the homes that get them will most likely always get them.

Scorpions in Maricopa AZ

If this is a concern for you, when viewing homes for sale you could look around for any dead ones, especially in the garage.  Many homes for sale are vacant and you will see dead bugs and get a good idea of what creeps around.  Another thing to consider is if the home is close to the desert or tucked deeply in a subdivision.  You are less likely to get scorps if you are tucked deep within civilization.  If you finally choose a home, check the seals around windows and doors to make sure they are snug where bugs can’t get in easily.

Do you live in Maricopa and have a scorpion story?  Comment it below!

Now, let’s say you buy a home and to your horror, you see a scorpion.  Try to snap a picture of it so you can show it to an exterminator.  The bark scorpions are common in Arizona.  Exterminators aren’t very expensive and will help keep them at bay.  However, the poison exterminators use takes about 7 days to actually kill the scorpion.  But reducing the numbers of bugs in general will help defer scorps from your property.  If you see one in your home, I’d suggest killing it but watch out because they carry babies on their backs that will jump off and run away when confronted.  Also, keep in mind scorpions are nocturnal.  You can walk around your property with a blacklight at night to see what’s lingering around.  Scorpions glow brightly under a blacklight.

To sum it up, it’s the luck of the draw whether you will see scorpions in Maricopa AZ or not… whether in Maricopa or anywhere in the Phoenix metro area.  If you get stung, call your doctor or 911.  They will most likely advise you to put ice on it and come in if any serious symptoms arise.  A scorpion sting can be deadly to children and pets so I wouldn’t waste time getting to the hospital if my child was stung.

Are there Coyotes in Maricopa, AZ?

maricopa_az_coyotes

Are you thinking about buying a home in Maricopa, AZ and curious about coyotes?  I live and work as a realtor in Maricopa and have personally seen coyotes running across the streets at times while driving, usually coming from a wash.  I also live on the border of the desert in Rancho el Dorado and sometimes at night I can hear their howls and yelps behind my block wall.

In general, coyotes are scared of people and won’t attack.  I have never heard of any issues with coyotes in Maricopa.  One time I did see a policeman chasing one trying to corner it but the coyote was too fast.  lol.

If you have a coyote story, please comment it below.  I’d love to hear about it!

Rattlesnakes in Maricopa, AZ?

Are there Rattlesnakes in Maricopa, AZ?

rattlesnake_maricopa_az

You may be thinking about buying a home in Maricopa, AZ but first want to know if there are rattlesnakes.  The answer is YES.  It’s the desert southwest, and there are rattlesnakes in the southwest desert.  I remember not long ago coming home late at night and seeing one crawling down my street.  I couldn’t believe it.  That was the only time I have personally seen one in the wild.

Every so often you hear a story of someone seeing a rattlesnake.  They hibernate during the colder weather and come out at night when it warms up.  When I’ve heard any stories of people finding them in their homes it’s always been in the garage.  It’s a pretty rare occurrence to see a rattlesnake though.  So don’t worry about it too much.

To be on the safe side I wouldn’t walk around at night, especially through any kind of brush, and make sure the seals on your windows, doors, and garage are snug.  The worst thing you can do is catch a rattlesnake by surprise because you may get bit.  If you do get bit, get to the hospital immediately.
