Black Widow Spiders in Maricopa AZ

Black Widows in Maricopa, Arizona

Black Widow Spiders in Maricopa AZ

In addition to rattlesnakes and scorpions found in Maricopa, AZ you can add one more creepy crawler to the list… black widow spiders.  I’ve seen them around my own home in Maricopa and since I’m a real estate agent I come across them around vacant homes as well when checking out a property.

The black widow spiders in Maricopa AZ spin a messy looking silk web that has no specific pattern to it.  It also LOVES clutter.  If you have lots of yard tools, plant pots, and things like that propped up against your house you are creating real attractive real estate for the spider to call home.  You should also keep your garage clutter free.  If you have items scattered around your garage and lots of cardboard boxes I wouldn’t dig around in them without gloves.  If you are bit by the black widow you should get in to the doctor or Urgent Care right away.  Usually the bite is not life threatening but always err on the side of caution.

In my experience, black widow spiders in Maricopa AZ have been in any cluttered area around the home and up near the gutter.  Or where the roof meets the wall of the house.  They are hidden in the daytime but as soon as the sun goes down they come out and sit still in their webs awaiting prey.  They don’t move much but if startled they are very fast to get themselves out of site.

Black Widow Spiders in Maricopa AZ

I remember when I first moved into my home in Rancho el Dorado in 2011 it had been vacant for a while and I had purchased it site unseen.  When I made the move from New Jersey to Maricopa I had never seen a black widow and looking around my house at night within the first few days of being in Arizona I was filled with fear to see black widows all along the house near the roof.

My heart was racing because I do not like spiders.  I came up with a plan.  I grabbed the Raid bug spray and sprayed all of the black widows real good and ran inside.  After about half hour I went to check out the webs again.  To my horror all the spiders were right back sitting in their webs totally unaffected by the poison. I found out that regular sprays don’t usually work.  You need to purchase a specific spray for black widows.  In the end, I did something I do not recommend and got the spiders down with a stick then stepped on them.  I got every one.  And guess what, I never had any more of them again after that.

Looking to buy a home in Maricopa?

If you’re curious if you have black widows spiders in Maricopa AZ, I’d walk the perimeter of your home at night.  Grab a flashlight and check it out.  And remember to always wear gloves when gardening or cleaning up the garage.  They say the safest way to get rid of spiders is to vacuum them and their webs.  I’d be too scared they would somehow crawl through the tubes of the vacuum and come back out!  lol.  It’s probably best just to call a pest control company.

Concrete Issue in Maricopa AZ?

Sulfate Issues in Maricopa, AZ

Concrete Issue in Maricopa AZ

You may have heard that there was a concrete issue in Maricopa AZ.  Basically, they are in relation to the foundations of the homes from when they were built.  The sulfate in the ground absorbs into the concrete foundations and wears it away.  There was a study done on the issue and it the results of the study found that the only subdivision in Maricopa that could be affected by this is Maricopa Meadows.  AMEC Earth and Environmental Inc performed the study and you can see the results in their official document.

In detail, according to the International Building Code, sulfate levels of .1 – .2 can have moderate effect,  .2 – 2 have severe effects and anything above 2 can have very severe effects.  Sulfate levels in the ground in several places in Maricopa Meadows tested as .12, .17, .33, .34 and .03.  Sulfate levels can drastically change from home to home.  Does this cause concern about the concrete issue in Maricopa, AZ?

What happens is when the soil becomes wet the sulfates dissolve in the water and are absorbed by the concrete which dries, then the sulfates attack the materials that hold the concrete together.  There needs to be a cycle of moisture to drying to create the breakdown of the concrete.  Some protective measures would be to make sure sprinklers aren’t spraying near the base of the home.  Also, grading the ground to push water away from the foundation, installing rain gutters, and utilizing sealants on the concrete.  However, homes with this concrete issue in Maricopa AZ should still hold up for over 100 years.

Concrete Issue in Maricopa AZ?

A lawsuit was filed by the HOA in 2010.  In addition it also involved 600 or so of the 1600 homeowners in Maricopa Meadows.  It concluded that the builders were negligent and used an incorrect concrete mixture.   The home builders involved were Brown Family Communities, Courtland Homes, Elite Communities, Frontier Homes, HomeLife Communities, KB Home, Richmond American Homes and Standard Pacific Homes.  Apparently, it ended with the homeowners receiving a check for a few thousand dollars to have epoxy injections into the foundation that is supposed to repair the issue.  There are also water proofing techniques that can help as well.  If you are concerned you should talk to a professional technician who knows specifically about the sulfate issue in Maricopa, AZ.  They can possibly ease your mind with correct repairs.

Where is Maricopa AZ?

Maricopa: Where is it Located?

Many people ask the question Where is Maricopa, AZ.  I’m here to let you know where it is.  Maricopa (aka.the city of Maricopa) is located in Pinal County in Arizona (not Maricopa county).  Odd, right?

So, where in Pinal County is Maricopa, AZ located?  Well, it is 16 miles south of Chandler, AZ down SR 347 or 20 miles from Casa Grande via Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway.  From Chandler, you’ll cross 16 miles of desert before hitting the first two subdivisions of Maricopa: Rancho el Dorado and Cobblestone Farms.  On the drive south on SR 347 you will pass the Huhugam Heritage Center, a mountain with a white “M” on it, and you may also see some wild horses running around.

Many people know of Maricopa as having only a train station and cow farms.  It’s much different now!  In 2003, a lot of homes were built prior to the market crash of 2008.  19 subdivisions went up along with a lot of commercial development putting Maricopa on the map.  Speaking of maps, here are directions from Phoenix, AZ to Maricopa, AZ.

Maricopa, AZ is a great place to find more home for your money while staying within commuting distance to the Phoenix area.  It’s a hot real estate market.  When the market crashed Maricopa was known for all of its foreclosures.  People walked out of these newer homes because the values tanked so dramatically.  Then there was a time period when you could get these homes extremely cheap, I’m talking $60,000.  I wish I had the money then to invest in a few!  The prices have gone up steadily since then. However, Maricopa still has great prices if you’re going to buy a home.  You can get a lot of house for the money and still be close enough to the Phoenix area.

I also want to mention the homes in Maricopa that aren’t in HOA subdivisions.  They offer lots of land and allow for peace and quiet in the serenity of the desert.  Some are manufactured, some not.  They are in the Thunderbird Farms and Hidden Valley area that offers great mountain views, horse properties, and lots of land.  Some folks buy a plot of land and build their own home on it.

I hope this answers your question of where is Maricopa, AZ.  It’s really a great place to live.  There’s a lot of expansion and development in the works and I see a bright future for the city.  So, where is Maricopa, AZ?  I say it’s right where it should be.  🙂  There is lots to do and it has everything you need.  The videos below will show you what Maricopa has to offer.

If you are looking to buy a home in Maricopa I’d love to help.  I’m a realtor who lives and works in Maricopa, so please contact me at the information below.

It is important to realize that Maricopa, AZ is about 16 miles south of Chandler, AZ.  If you’ll be working in Chandler, Tempe, Ahwatukee, Mesa, Gilbert, Scottsdale or in Phoenix you’re commute should be almost 45 minutes.  By comparison, why bother with having a commute when you can just move closer to work?  Well, I’d suggest you look at the homes for sale in Maricopa, AZ because you will see what you can get for your money.  In brief, it’s very enticing.

Moving to Phoenix Where to Live?

Why are the home prices so attractive in Maricopa in the first place?  In sum, before 2003 it was mostly just cow farms but then home builders came in and started building homes in Maricopa and selling them like hot cakes.  Then the market crashed in 2008 and Maricopa was known nationally for all of its foreclosures.  Prices dropped down to the $50k’s for these nice new homes as Maricopa and the rest of the country started recovering from the market crash.

Ever since, the homes have steadily regained value and continue to do so.  Plus, since Maricopa is outside of the Phoenix area it will always be a bit more attractive on price.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Maricopa, AZ

Eating Dinner at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Maricopa

Dickey's Barbecue Pit
Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Maricopa, AZ

I took my family to eat tonight at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit here in Maricopa.  It was the first time I had been there.  I had heard about it and knew it was there near Basha’s super market but never went there to eat.  As soon as I walked in I loved the atmosphere.  There were logs stacked up along the walls, the smell made my mouth water, it was clean, and the ambience was very modern.

Related: List of all places to eat in Maricopa

I gazed over the Dickey’s menu and decided to get a pork classic sandwich, side of potato salad and a drink.  My wife got the beef brisket plate.  One of her sides were mac n cheese that we gave to our six year old daughter.  The fountain soda was from a Coke freestyle machine and there were three BBQ sauces you could help yourself too at the condiment station.

I put some of their original barbecue sauce on my sandwich and ate it with delight.  It was delicious!  The potato salad was great as well and usually I only take a few bites of potato salad.  I admit I was also eyeing my wife beef’s brisket and she shared a piece with me to try it.  It was tender and juicy.  It was a toss up of which one I liked better.

Need a Maricopa, AZ Realtor?  Contact me today…

Honestly, I’m usually not a fan of barbecue restaurants and many I have been in were messy looking with gross half filled BBQ sauce bottles on each of the tables.  This experience was much cleaner and the food was much better than expected.

I will certainly be back to eat at Dickey’s again!

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is located at #D7 20924 N. John Wayne Pkwy, Maricopa, AZ.  Their phone number is (520) 220-5880.  They are open 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. and offer delivery and take out as well.
